Wilson Defyer Pro 98 v1.0

Wilson Defyer Pro 98 v1

The Wilson Defyer product release is one of the most unusual and talked-about releases in a long time!

The initial prototypes were “Python”; the next iteration was “Redline”; and the newly released, and final, version is the “Defyer”.

The Defyer is available in 98 and 100 square inch head sizes.  The string pattern is 16×20 with spacing that allows for a broad range of string bed stiffnesses to suit most play styles.

The head shape and geometry are familiar; however, there is some “sculpting” going on that adds something to the overall appearance.

While appearance is important, the real stuff is in the numbers, and we have those right here…

After you go through the numbers, stick around for some additional highlights that may go unnoticed.

Something with tennis racquets that is important to us is “serviceability”.  The Defyer, like most Wilson racquets, has a nice grommet system that protects the string from “court contact” damage, and is “aerodynamic” in shape.

The grip pallet system is another matter, however, and makes grip size and shape modifications difficult, if not impossible.  So, when you are making a purchasing decision, be sure you are choosing the correct grip size.  This pallet system is not unique to the Defyer, but the Defyer is in the category of  “customizable” racquets.  Don’t plan on much grip customization!

Wilson Blade v10 here? Yes!

The Wilson Blade series has been one of the most recognized tennis racquets over the past several years, and this v10 builds on that reputation!

We will be adding our typical review (yes, numbers) and images soon.  I can tell you that images won’t convey the appeal of this racquet’s color!

So, stop by the Word Headquarters and see it LIVE, and even try a demo of one of the models.

Check back here often, and when you see the reviews, you know the demo racquets have been set up and are ready to go.

A Wilson RF 01 300 Extended

We want to share the specifications of an extended (70.0mm/27.559) Wilson RF 01 300.

The lengthening process involves removing the staples holding the butt on, which needs to be done carefully for the integrity of the foam pallet, before proceeding with the next steps.

Any time the butt cap comes off a racquet, the first step is to fill the open shaft with a stopper, preferably cotton, to the desired depth for fitting or protection.  If the racquet is “foamed” some of it is removed.

Numerous small details go into the extension we design and print, so we will not go into all of those right now.

The area that will accept the extension is filled with a new two (2) part epoxy made by Starbond.  This epoxy is nearly fully cured after several minutes; however, we prefer to let it cure overnight before proceeding with any other work.

After the curing cycle, the butt cap is installed.  We do not use staples in most cases, only a chemical adhesive.  Staples can easily damage the original foam pallet and the extension if the location is not ideal.

If you make it to the end of this data table, you will find some comparison data.  This data is a glance at what has changed from the original 27-inch length.  This is a specific racquet, so your specifications, if extended, may differ.

This is enough small talk, so let’s take a look at the results of the extension.
